DP-600: the Fabric Analytics Engineer exam

The natural first Fabric certification for anyone who builds in Power BI. It tests judgement, not buttons.

What DP-600 actually asks of you

The exam is organised around a workflow rather than a feature list, which is why a feature by feature course prepares you badly for it. Broadly it moves through three things.

Planning and managing an analytics environment. Workspaces, access, capacity, deployment and the lifecycle around them. Dry, and reliably where people lose marks, because it is the part nobody enjoys revising.
Preparing and serving data. Ingesting into a lakehouse, the SQL analytics endpoint, when a warehouse is the correct answer instead, shortcuts, and the transformations between. This is the conceptual centre of the exam.
Modelling and analysing. Semantic models, relationships, DAX, performance and the governance that keeps a model trustworthy once several people depend on it.

The scenario questions are the differentiator. They present a situation and ask what you would do, and several answers work while only one is appropriate to the constraints given. That format rewards people who have made these choices badly at least once.

Check the skills measured document before you start, and again before you sit. It is the actual specification, it is free on Microsoft Learn, and Microsoft revises exam content without changing the exam code. Every course covering DP-600, including anything recommended below, is an interpretation of that page and can be out of date while still describing itself as current.

A preparation sequence that works

Read the skills measured list and mark what you cannot already do

Twenty minutes, and it turns a vague syllabus into a short list. Most Power BI developers find the gap is smaller than they expected and sits almost entirely in the environment and lakehouse sections.

Work the official learning path, skipping what you marked as known

It is free and more current than anything paid. Do not work through it linearly out of diligence: the modelling modules will be revision for a lot of readers and the time is better spent elsewhere.

Provision a trial capacity and build something with your own data

The single highest value step, and the one most often skipped. Ingest something awkward, model it, break it, and watch what a capacity does when you are careless. Scenario questions assume this experience.

Take the free official practice assessment, twice

Once early, to calibrate, and once when you think you are ready. The gap between the two scores tells you more than either number does.

Check for an open voucher campaign, then book a date

Booking is what makes the revision happen. Microsoft periodically runs community voucher campaigns that make an attempt free, and they are capped and dated, so check before paying.

Best for: Anyone sitting DP-600, and anyone who wants the vendor's own definition of scope before paying for a third party interpretation of it.
Watch out: It teaches you the product, not the job. The modules are competent but flat, the sandbox exercises rarely fail the way real tenants fail, and there is no guidance on the decisions that actually cost money, such as when a warehouse beats a lakehouse. Expect to finish it able to pass an exam and still unsure how to start a project.

The same official curriculum as the free learning path, delivered live by a certified trainer with labs on a provisioned tenant. The courseware is Microsoft's; the teaching quality is entirely the partner's.

Best for: Teams who need a fixed date in the calendar and a provisioned environment they do not have to build themselves.
Watch out: You are paying for the trainer, not the content, because the content is free. Partner quality varies enormously and the course code tells you nothing about it. Ask for the named trainer and their delivery history before you book, and refuse to accept a substitution on the day.
Format: Four day instructor led, in person or virtual. Four days

Fabric Analytics Engineer certification bootcamp

An intensive, exam focused format that removes every distraction and gets a motivated candidate to a sitting quickly.

Best for: Someone with a deadline and an employer paying, who already works with data and needs the certificate rather than the education.
Watch out: Bootcamps optimise for the exam, and the exam is not the job. Retention after an intensive week is poor unless you apply it immediately, so only book one if you have real Fabric work waiting the following week. If you do not, spend the money on the work instead.

DP-600 questions

What is DP-600?

DP-600 is the exam for the Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate certification. It covers preparing and modelling data in Fabric and turning it into analysis that people can rely on: the lakehouse and warehouse split, the SQL analytics endpoint, semantic models, DAX and the governance around them.

Is DP-600 hard?

Not conceptually, if you already build in Power BI. The difficulty is breadth: it expects you to make architectural choices, not just operate an interface, and the scenario questions punish anyone who has only watched videos. The people who struggle are usually those who prepared without ever provisioning a capacity.

Do I need Power BI experience to pass DP-600?

Not formally, but it makes an enormous difference. A large part of the exam is the semantic model layer, which is Power BI's territory with Fabric vocabulary on top. Coming in without it, budget significantly more time and work through modelling and DAX separately before touching the Fabric specific material.

How long does it take to prepare for DP-600?

With solid Power BI experience and a few hours a week, a few focused weeks is realistic. Without it, expect several months, most of which is modelling rather than Fabric. Anyone promising a pass in a weekend is describing a bootcamp, which works for the exam and poorly for retention.

Does DP-600 expire?

Yes. It is an associate level certification, valid for one year, renewed through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn during a window before expiry. Miss it and you re-sit the full exam. See the certification guide.
