Fabric certification, and the renewal rule

DP-600 and DP-700 test different jobs, not different difficulty levels. Both expire after a year.

DP-600 against DP-700

They are not sequential and one is not the advanced version of the other. They describe two different roles that happen to share a platform.

If you genuinely cannot tell which applies to you, take DP-600 first. It overlaps more with what most people already do, the material is more forgiving of a Power BI background, and passing it makes the DP-700 syllabus considerably easier to read. The reverse is not true.

The renewal rule, stated plainly

Associate level Microsoft certifications, which includes both Fabric certifications, are valid for twelve months. Renewal is a free, unproctored assessment taken on Microsoft Learn during a window before the expiry date. It is not difficult and it takes well under an hour.

The problem is that it is easy to miss. The reminder emails land in whichever inbox you used at registration, which for a lot of people is an old work address, and the consequence of missing the window is disproportionate: the certification lapses and cannot be renewed, only re-earned by sitting and paying for the full exam again.

Do this on the day you pass. Put a calendar reminder eleven months out, on a calendar you will still have, and check the address on your Microsoft Learn profile is one you read. That single action is worth more than any exam preparation course sold on this page.

The annual cycle has a second effect worth understanding. Unlike certifications that never expire, a Fabric credential is evidence that you knew the platform recently, which is meaningful for a product that ships changes monthly. That makes it a better signal than most vendor certifications, and it is the strongest argument for holding one.

A realistic route to either exam

Four steps, in this order. Skipping the third is why capable people fail.

Read the skills measured document

Before any course. It is the actual specification, it is free, and it is revised more often than the courses that claim to cover it. Everything else is an interpretation of this page.

Step two

Work the official learning path

Free, current, and written by the team that writes the exam. See DP-600 or DP-700 for what each path covers and where it thins out.

Step three

Build something that is not an exercise

A trial capacity and a source of your own. People who skip this pass the practice assessments and then meet a scenario question that assumes you have watched a pipeline fail.

Practice assessment, then book

The free official practice assessment is a reasonable calibration. Book the exam once you clear it comfortably, and check for an open voucher campaign first.

Best for: Anyone sitting DP-600, and anyone who wants the vendor's own definition of scope before paying for a third party interpretation of it.
Watch out: It teaches you the product, not the job. The modules are competent but flat, the sandbox exercises rarely fail the way real tenants fail, and there is no guidance on the decisions that actually cost money, such as when a warehouse beats a lakehouse. Expect to finish it able to pass an exam and still unsure how to start a project.

The DP-700 counterpart. Ingestion, transformation, orchestration, Spark, eventstreams and the operational side of a Fabric estate.

Best for: Data engineers who already work in Spark or ADF and need to map what they know onto Fabric's vocabulary.
Watch out: The Spark content assumes you already know Spark. If you are coming from a pure SQL or Power BI background this path will quietly lose you around the notebook modules, and nothing in it tells you that has happened. Do a Spark primer first or you will conclude Fabric is harder than it is.

Best for: Teams who need a fixed date in the calendar and a provisioned environment they do not have to build themselves.
Watch out: You are paying for the trainer, not the content, because the content is free. Partner quality varies enormously and the course code tells you nothing about it. Ask for the named trainer and their delivery history before you book, and refuse to accept a substitution on the day.

Watch out: The courseware is Microsoft's official material, freely available in written form, so the fee buys the trainer, the schedule and the lab environment. Judge it on those three things alone, and be aware that public classes mix audiences, so the pace is set by the least prepared person in the room.

Watch out: Bootcamps optimise for the exam, and the exam is not the job. Retention after an intensive week is poor unless you apply it immediately, so only book one if you have real Fabric work waiting the following week. If you do not, spend the money on the work instead.

Fabric certification questions

Which Microsoft Fabric certification should I take, DP-600 or DP-700?

DP-600 if your work ends in a report or a semantic model. DP-700 if your work ends in a pipeline that runs at three in the morning. The split is genuinely about the job rather than about difficulty, and taking the wrong one is the most common mistake here. If you have come from Power BI, DP-600 is the natural first exam.

Do Microsoft Fabric certifications expire?

Yes, and this is the detail most people miss. Associate level Microsoft certifications are valid for one year and are renewed through a free online assessment taken on Microsoft Learn during a renewal window before expiry. Miss the window and the certification lapses, at which point the only route back is sitting the full paid exam again. Put the date in your calendar the day you pass.

How much does the DP-600 or DP-700 exam cost?

The fee varies substantially by country, and Microsoft periodically runs voucher campaigns tied to community events that make an attempt free. Because both move, this site does not quote a figure. Check the exam page on Microsoft Learn for your region, and check whether a voucher campaign is open before you pay, because the campaigns are capped and dated.

Is a Fabric certification worth it?

It is worth more than most vendor certifications right now, for one structural reason: Fabric is new enough that few people hold one, so it still functions as a genuine signal. That will decay as the population grows. It is worth least if you already have demonstrable Fabric work to point at, and most if you are trying to move into the space without it.

What about DP-800?

DP-800 is the SQL AI Developer Associate certification. It sits adjacent to Fabric rather than inside it, covering Azure SQL and AI integration, and its concepts increasingly overlap with Fabric work without being Fabric certifications in the sense that DP-600 and DP-700 are. Take it because the SQL and AI content matches your job, not because you want a Fabric credential.

Can I pass DP-600 without using Fabric at work?

Yes, and a fair number of people do. Whether that is a good idea is a different question. The exam is passable from the official learning path plus a trial capacity, but the gap between a pass and being useful on a project is wide, and it shows quickly in an interview that asks what you would do when a capacity throttles.
